Wherwell, Hampshire
Historical Description
Wherwell, a village and a parish in Hants. The village has a station on the L. & S.W.R., 67 miles from London and 3½ SSE of Andover, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Andover. The parish contains Fullerton and Westover tithings, and comprises 3634 acres; population, 583. There is a parish council consisting of ten members. A Benedictine nunnery was founded here by Elfrida, the widow of King Edgar; was given at the dissolution to the first Lord Delawarr, and passed to the Iremongers. A large sheep fair is held yearly on 24 Sept. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester; gross value, 265 with residence. The church was rebuilt in 1859, and is a handsome building of flint and stone in the Early English style, containing numerous memorials to the Iremonger family. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
