Little Horkesley, Essex

Historical Description

Horkesley, Little, a parish in Essex, contiguous to the SW side of Great Horkesley, and 4 miles N from Colchester station on the G.E.R. It has a post office under Colchester; money, order office. Great Horkesley; telegraph office, Nay-land. Acreage, 1026; population of the civil parish, 171; of the ecclesiastical, 190. Horkesley Hall is a spacious mansion in the Classic style, standing in beautiful grounds, and "Westwood House is a fine mansion in the Tudor style, standing in a park of 65 acres. A Cluniac priory, a cell to Thetford monastery, was founded here in the time of Henry I., by Robert Fitzgodebold, and was suppressed by Cardinal Wolsey. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of St Albans; gross value, £70. The church stands high, is ancient and has a tower and five bells, and contains interesting brasses and wooden effigies of Crusaders. It was restored in 1878 at considerable cost, a vestry and organ chamber being added at the same time. There is a small charity.
