Newfield (Auckland), Durham

Historical Description

Newfield, a township, with a village, in Auckland St Andrew parish, Durham, 3 miles N of Bishop Auckland. It has a post and money order office under Willington (R.S.O.); telegraph office, Byers Green. Acreage, 196 of land and 10 of water; population, 1130. Coal-mining is carried on, firebricks are made, and there are several coke ovens. Some spots command a fine view. There are Primitive Methodist and Methodist New Connexion chapels.
