Howgate, Edinburghshire

Historical Description

HOWGATE, a hamlet, in the parish of Penicuick, county of Edinburgh, 2 miles (S. S. E.) from Penicuick; containing 81 inhabitants. It lies near the high road from Edinburgh to Dumfries; and in its neighbourhood are several fine streams, some of which are tributaries to the Esk. The village is but a short distance from the boundary of Peeblesshire. A Secession meeting-house was built here in 1750.
