Easthouses, Edinburghshire

Historical Description

EASTHOUSES, a village, in the parish of Newbattle, county of Edinburgh, 1 mile (E.) from Newbattle; containing, in 1841, 420 inhabitants. This was a considerable colliery-village, the population being chiefly employed in the neighbouring mines of the Marquess of Lothian, which are very extensive. It is now gradually falling into decay, the colliers having mostly removed to a new village in the parish.
