Historical Description

BACKDEAN, a hamlet, in the parish of Newton, county of Edinburgh; containing 45 inhabitants. This hamlet lies near the source of a small tributary to the Esk water, and borders upon the parish of luveresk, which is situated to the north-east of Backdean.
