East Holme, Dorset

Historical Description

Holme, East, a parish in Dorsetshire, on the river Frome, 1½ miles SW by W of Wareham station on the L. & S.W.R. Post town, Wareham. Acreage, 1070; population, 90. A small priory, a cell to Montacute Abbey, was founded in the time of Edward I. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Salisbury, gross value,, £50. The church was built in 1866.

Church Records

Church of England

St. John the Evangelist (parish church)

The parish church of St. John the Evangelist, erected in 1866 by Nathaniel Bond esq, is a building of stone and Purbeck marble in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing one bell: the paintings on the interior walls were all executed by Lady Selina Bond: all the windows are stained: there are 70 sittings : in the churchyard is an ornamental cross to the memory of a child of Nathaniel Bond esq.
