Kilcola, Roscommon
Historical Description
KILCOLA, a parish, in the barony of BOYLE, county of ROSCOMMON, and province of CONNAUGHT, 3 miles (E.) from Frenchpark, on the road from that place to Carrick-on-Shannon; containing 2363 inhabitants. It comprises 3097 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act, of which about one-tenth is bog, and the remainder arable or pasture land. Bella is the seat of E. French, Esq. The parish is in the diocese of Elphin; the rectory forms part of the union of Shankhill, and corps of the precentorship of Elphin; and the vicarage is part of the union of Easter-Snow. The tithes amount to £64. 12. 3½., and are equally divided between the precentor and the vicar. In the R. C. divisions it is included in the union or district of Croghan and Ballynameen, which is also called Killucan, and has a chapel at Knockglass. About 140 children are educated in two private schools.
