The church of St Stephen stands close behind the Mansion House; was built by Wren at a cost of £7652, and is said to have been considered by him his masterpiece; has a plain exterior but a very fine interior; is a parallelogram, 87 feet long and 64 wide, divided by two rows of Corinthian columns, with a dome rising from the centre, and surmounted by a lantern; contains West's "Stoning of Stephen," and the grave and monument of Sir John Vanbrugh; and had Pendleton, the turncoat vicar of Bray, as rector.
