Historical Description
West Town (St Matthew), a chapelry in Dewsbury parish, W.R. Yorkshire, adjacent to Dewsbury town and railway station, with a post, money order, and telegraph office (T.S.O.) under Dewsbury. It was constituted in 1849. Population, 3370. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Wakefield; gross value, £200. Patron, the Vicar of Dewsbury. The church is in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, and an embattled western tower, and was restored in 1889. There is also a Roman Catholic church.
