Wadsley, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Wadsley, a hamlet and an ecclesiastical parish, in Ecclesfield parish, W.R. Yorkshire, on the river Don, 3 miles NW of Sheffield. There is a station at Wadsley Bridge on the M.S. & L.R. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1841, and has a post office under Sheffield; money order office, Wadsley Bridge; telegraph office, Hillsborough. Population, 10,413. An ecclesiastical district was in 1894 formed out of the parish, comprising Wadsley Bridge and Barrowlee, and called Wadsley Bridge and Hillsborough district. The Duke of Norfolk is lord of the manor. Most of the inhabitants are employed in rolling-mills and cutlery manufacture. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York; net value, £385 with residence. The church was built in 1834. There are Wesleyan, Free Methodist, and Methodist New Connexion chapels, and six almshouses. The South Yorkshire Lunatic Asylum is in the neighbourhood.
