Thorp Arch, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Thorp Arch, a parish, with a village, in W.R. Yorkshire, on the river Wharfe, and on the York and Harrogate railway, 3½ miles NW of Tadcaster. It took its suffix name of Arch from the family of De Arcubus or De Arches, who came to England with the Conqueror, and it has a post office under Boston Spa (R.S.O.); money order office, Boston Spa; a railway station with telegraph, and a fine bridge over the Wharfe to Boston Spa. Acreage, 1529; population, 314. There is a parish council consisting of five members. The manor, with Thorp Arch Hall, belongs to the Hatfield family. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York; net value, £260 with residence. The church is Norman and Early English, and consists of chancel, nave, aisle, S porch, and embattled western tower. There is an endowed school.
