Historical Description
Thornhill, a village, a township, and a parish in the W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands on the river Calder, 6 miles from Wakefield, and 2 SSE of Dewsbury, and has a station on the L. & Y.R., and a post and money order office under Dewsbury; telegraph office, Thornhill Lees. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, an endowed school with £70 a, year, and charities of about £130. The township also contains the village of Thornhill Edge, and comprises 2564 acres, of which 61 are water; population, 8727. It is governed by a district council. The manor belongs to Lord Savile. There are collieries, iron foundries, and a woollen mill. The parish includes likewise Shitlington, Midgley, Flockton, and Lower Whitley townships. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Wakefield; net value, £525 with residence. Patron, Lord Savile. The church is ancient, and contains interesting monuments and fine stained glass windows. The nave was rebuilt in 1879. There are a mission church and Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels at Thomhill Edge. The vicarages of Thornhill Lees, Middlestown or Shitlington, Lower Whitley, and Flockton are separate benefices.
