Thorner, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Thorner, a village, a township, and a parish, in the W.R. Yorkshire. The township lies 6¼ miles from Wetherby and 7 from Leeds, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Leeds, and a station on the N.E.R. Acreage, 2460; population of township, 858; of ecclesiastical parish, 1120. The parish includes Scarcroft and Shadwell townships. There are many good residences. The Earl of Mexborough is lord of the manor. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon; gross value, £375 with residence. Patron, the Earl of Mexborough. The church was restored and enlarged in 1855; it is in the Early English style, consisting of chancel with S aisle, nave, aisles, S porch, and an embattled western tower, and contains several memorial windows. The vicarage of Shadwell is a separate benefice. There are a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1877-78, in the Decorated style, with tower and lofty spire, a reading-room, established in 1880, and an endowed national school.
