Tankersley, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Tankersley, a township and a parish in W.R. Yorkshire. The township lies about a mile from Westwood and Birdwell railway stations, 4¾ miles S of Barnsley, and 9 from Sheffield. It has a post and money order office of the name of Wharncliffe Silkstone Colliery under Barnsley; telegraph office, Birdwell (R.S.) It contains Pilley hamlet and Thorncliffe ironworks, and several large collieries. Acreage, 2463; population, 2216. There is a parish council consisting of eleven members. Tankersley manor belongs to Earl Fitzwilliam, and Pilley manor to Lord Wharncliffe. The parish includes also Wortley township, which has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Sheffield. The living is a rectory in the diocese of York; net value, £685 with residence. Patron, Earl Fitzwilliam. The church is Norman, and consists of chancel, nave, N aisle, S porch, and embattled western tower. The chancel was restored in 1865, and in 1881 the X aisle was rebuilt and enlarged. There are six memorial windows. The churchyard was enlarged in 1881. The vicarage of Wortley is a separate benefice. There are a mission schoolroom at Westwood, built in 1878, and a mission church at Pilley, built in 1870.
