Swillington, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Swillington, a parish in the W.R. Yorkshire, 2 miles NNE of Woodlesford station on the M.R., and 5 E by S of Leeds. Post town, Leeds; money order and telegraph office, Woodlesford. It includes Astley hamlet. Acreage, 2627; population, 886. There is a parish council consisting of five members. The manor, with Swillington House, belongs to the baronet family of Lowther. Leventhorpe Hall is another chief residence. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ripon; net value, £366 with residence. The church is Early English, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, S porch, and a lofty embattled tower, which was rebuilt in 1884. It contains monuments to the Swillingtons, the Lowthers, and others. There are an endowed school, alms-houses, and a Wesleyan chapel on Swillington Common.
