Stannington, West Riding of Yorkshire

Historical Description

Stannington, a chapelry, with a village and several hamlets, in Ecclesfield parish, W.R. Yorkshire, 5 miles W of Sheffield railway station. It was constituted in 1843, and comprises Hollow Meadows, Dungworth, Matlock, and Rivelin, and it has a post and money order office under Sheffield; telegraph office, Hillsborough. Population, 3354. The Duke of Norfolk is lord of the manor. Cutlery and hardware manufacture are carried on; there are paper and corn mills, and coal pits, and fire-brick are made. A Roman settlement was here. Revell Grange is a chief residence. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York; gross value, £150 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Ecclesfield. The church was erected in 1830, and consists of nave, aisles, and a bell-turret. There are Primitive Methodist, Unitarian, Wesleyan, and Roman Catholic chapels, and the Truants Industrial School for boys at Hollow Meadows.
