Historical Description
Spen, a hamlet in Gomersal township in the W.R. Yorkshire, 4½ miles NW of Dewsbury, and 1½ mile from Birstal station on the G.N.R.
Spen Valley Parliamentary Division of the W.R. Yorkshire was formed under the Redistribution of Seats Act of 1885, and returns one member to the House of Commons. Population, 57,402. The division includes the following:- Dewsbury (part of)-Gomersal, Heckmondwike, Liversedge; Morley, East (part of)-Cleckheaton, Wike; Morley, West (part of)-Clifton, Hartishead.
