Southowram, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Southowram, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish, in Halifax parish, in the W.R. Yorkshire. The township is mainly in the municipal and county borough of Halifax, and the part not so included is governed by a district council. It lies 1½ mile SE from Halifax railway station, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Halifax. Acreage, 2546; population, 9392, of whom 6334 are in the borough of Halifax. There are extensive stone quarries, and a colliery. The ecclesiastical parish was formed in 1887. Population, 3603. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Wakefield; net value, £290 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Halifax. The church is in the Gothic style, was erected in 1818, and restored in 1885. A chancel was added in 1869. It consists of chance!, nave, and embattled western tower, and has several stained windows and a handsome reredos. There are Wesleyan, Free Primitive, and United Methodist chapels; also a Roman Catholic industrial school, with accommodation for 150 boys, comprising workshops, school-room, dormitories, and large swimming-baths; it has a large market-garden with hothouses and greenhouses attached to it. Cromwell Bottom is a hamlet in this township. A mission room was built at Purlwell, adjoining Cromwell Bottom, in 1895.
