Snaith, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Snaith, a small market-town, a township, and a parish in W.R. Yorkshire. The town stands on the river Aire and on the L. & Y.E., 7 miles W of Goole, and 180 from London, and is a seat of petty sessions. It has been much improved of late years, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office (R.S.O.), a railway station, a church, a Wesleyan chapel, a grammar-school with £40 a year from endowment, alms-houses for six widows and six widowers, and some other charities. A weekly market is held on Thursday, and cattle fairs on the last Thursday of April and 10 Aug. The township contains two villages, East and West Cawick, and the hamlet of New Bridge, and comprises 6018 acres, of which 74 are water; population, 1596. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. The manor belongs to the Cooper family. The parish is extensive and comprises the townships of Goole, Hook, Airmyn, Pollington, Rawcliffe, Balne, Carlton, Gowdall, Hensall, and Heck. Population of ecclesiastical parish, 1047. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York; gross value, £426 with residence. The church is a large building in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, and embattled western towers.
