Historical Description
Smeaton, Kirk, a small village and a parish in the W.R. Yorkshire, 6 miles from Pontefract, with a station on the Hull and Barnsley railway, and a post office under Pontefract; money order office, Womersley; telegraph office, Askern. Acreage, 1700; population of the civil parish, 292; of the ecclesiastical, 234. There is a Roman encampment in the parish. The Nevile family are lords of the manor and chief landowners. The living is a rectory in the diocese of York; gross value, £263 with residence. Patron, Earl Fitzwilliam. The church is a building in the Norman style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisle, and an embattled western tower; it was thoroughly restored in 1864, and an organ was built in 1875.
