Slaithwaite, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Slaithwaite, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish in the W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands on the river Colne, the Huddersfield Canal, and the Leeds and Manchester railway, 4½ miles WSW of Huddersfield. It has a station on the railway, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Huddersfield. A cattle fair is held on alternate Mondays. The township is in Huddersfield parish, and comprises 2407 acres of land and 29 of water; population, 3471. The manor belongs to the Earl of Dartmouth. Slaithwaite Hall includes remains of the ancient manorial residence. The railway in its course through the township traverses two viaducts of eighteen and nineteen arches. Mineral baths are here, with fine gardens, amid romantic scenery, and are much frequented in summer. The woollen and cotton manufactures are carried on, and there are stone quarries. An old corn and flour mill, built before 1800, is still working, and employs a number of hands. The ecclesiastical parish contains also Lingards township, in Almondbury parish. Population, 4570. The two townships of Slaithwaite and Lingards are governed by an urban district council of twelve members-nine for the former and three for the latter. The living is a perpetual curacy, with Lingards annexed, in the diocese of Wakefield; net value, £180. Patron, the Vicar of Huddersfield. The church was partly rebuilt in 1856, and thoroughly restored in 1891. It is in the Gothic style, and consists of chancel, nave, and tower. There are Baptist and Free Methodist chapels, Conservative and Liberal clubs, a working-men's club, two banks, and a police station.
