Slaidburn, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Slaidburn, a village, a township, and a parish in the W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands on the river Hodder, 9 miles N by W of Clitheroe railway station, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Clitheroe, and cattle fairs on the Wednesday before Easter and 4 Nov. The township comprises 5182 acres; population, 441; of the ecclesiastical parish, 992. There is a parish council of five members and a chairman. The manor belongs to the Townley family. The parish contains also the three townships of Bowland Forest (High), Newton, and Easington. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ripon; tithes commuted at £513 with residence. The church is Early English, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, transept, and a western tower. There are a Wesleyan chapel, an endowed school with £80 a year, a Quakers' school in Newton township at which John Bright was educated, and charities worth £150 per annum.
