Historical Description
Shadwell, a village, a township, and an ecclesiastical parish in Thomer parish, W.R. Yorkshire. The township lies 4 miles N by W of Crossgates station on the N.E.R., and 5 NNE of Leeds. It has a post office under Leeds; money order office, Thorner; telegraph office, Scarcroft. Acreage, 1165; population, 1048. The manor belongs to the Musgrave family. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1844; population, 873. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon; gross value, £186 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Thorner. The church was built in 1842, is in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, transept, and small belfry, and has several stained glass windows. There are a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1892, and the Leeds Industrial School, with accommodation for about 180 boys.
