Ripponden, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Ripponden, a village and an ecclesiastical parish in Halifax parish, W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands on the Eyburne rivulet, 5½ miles SW of Halifax, is partly in the township of Barkisland but chiefly in that of Soyland, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Halifax, and a station on the L. & Y.E. The ecclesiastical parish was formed in 1878, but church services began to be held in 1450. It comprises Eishworth township and part of Soyland and Barkisland townships. Population, 4309. The three townships have each an urban district council of nine members. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Wake-field; gross value, £350 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Halifax. The church was built in 1868, is in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, and tower with lofty spire. There are a Congregational chapel, Liberal and Conservative clubs, a bank, and a working men's club and institute.
