Historical Description
Pateley Bridge, a market-town and ecclesiastical parish in the W.R. Yorkshire. The town stands on the river Nidd, at the terminus of the Nidd Valley railway, 11 miles SW by W of Ripon. It consists chiefly of one street, going down a steep descent toward the river; is a polling-place, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Leeds, a railway station, three banks, three hotels, a bridge over the river, a ruined church, a new church, a mortuary chapel in the old churchyard, Congregational, Wesleyan, and Primitive Methodist chapels, a mechanics' institute, a free school at Wilsill, and at Bewerley, and Glasshouses, a workhouse, an Oddfellows hall (erected at a cost of £700), and a police office and court. A House of Rest for poor women living in Bradford was built and is supported by the Hon. H. E. Butler-A cemetery of 3 acres was formed in 1874 under the control of a burial board, and there are Conservative and Liberal clubs. The church was built in 1827 at a cost of £4000; is in the Gothic style; consists of nave, three aisles, and chancel, with a tower with a peal of six bells; and was redecorated in 1888. A weekly market is held on Saturday, and a well-attended fair for sheep and cattle is held every alternate Saturday. Brewing and flax-spinning are carried on, and large quarries are in the neighbourhood. The ecclesiastical parish is in Ripon parish, and comprises the townships of High and Low Bishopside and Bewerley. Population½ 2910. There are two parish councils, one of eleven members for High and Low Bishopside, and one of nine members for Bewerley. The scenery along the river is picturesque, a moor of upwards of 4000 acres has been enclosed, and extensive stalactite and stalagmite caverns at Stump Cross were discovered in 1860. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon; net value, £270 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Ripon.
