Pannal, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Pannal, a village and a parish in W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands on an affluent of the river Nidd, and on the Leeds and Thirsk branch of the N.E.R., 3 miles S of Harrogate, and has a station on the railway, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Harrogate. The parish contains Beckworth and part of Harrogate, and comprises about 4898 acres; population, 3759. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. The manor belongs to the Duke of Devonshire. A Roman bridge spans the Oak Beck. Birk Crag is a romantic glen. On Harlow Hill is an observatory about 100 feet high, open to the public on payment of a small fee, and a great resort of visitors to Harrogate. There are sulphur baths at Harlow Carr. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon; net value, £340. The church is ancient but good, and consists of nave, transept, S porch, and chancel, with a tower. The vicarage of Low Harrogate is a separate benefice. There are two Wesleyan chapels. See HARROGATE.
