Owston, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Owston, a village, a township, and a parish in W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands 1½ mile from Carcroft station on the West Riding and Grimsby Joint railway, 1¼ from Askern railway station, and 5 miles N by W of Doncaster. The township contains also the hamlets of Carcroft and Holme. Acreage, 2727; population of township, 356; of the ecclesiastical parish, 453. The parish contains also the township of Skellow, and its post town is Doncaster; money order and telegraph office, Askern. Population, 491. There is a parish council consisting of five members. The manor, with Owston Park and most of the land, belongs to the Davies-Cooke family. The mansion is old, has been very much improved, and stands in a park of about 200 acres. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York; net value, £110 with residence. The church is ancient, was restored in 1865, contains several handsome monuments to the Cooke family, and stands on the N side of Owston Park. The chancel was thoroughly restored in 1872 and 1873 under the direction of the late Sir G. Gilbert Scott. There are a Wesleyan chapel and a national school at Carcroft.
