Ovenden, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Ovenden, a township in the parish, and since 1892 wholly in the county borough of Halifax, in the W.R. Yorkshire. It stands 1½ mile NW of Halifax, is a large and scattered place, and has a post and money order office under Halifax; telegraph office. Booth Town. The township also comprises Illingworth, Holdsworth, Mount Pellon, and Wheatley, extends nearly 5 miles north of Halifax, and has a station at Ovenden, on the G.N.R. Acreage, 5350; population, 13,458. There are many extensive cotton and worsted mills. For ecclesiastical purposes the township is divided into the parishes of Ovenden St George, Illingworth, and parts of Mount Pellon and Bradshaw Lane or Ovenden St John. St George's Church was completed in 1877, is in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, and tower, with spire. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Wakefield; net value, £240 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Halifax. The Church of St Mary's (Illingworth) was rebuilt in 1777 and thoroughly restored in 1888, and contains several stained windows. There are also Congregational, Primitive and New Connexion Methodist, and Wesleyan chapels, almshouses, and charities.
