Historical Description
Outwood, an ecclesiastical parish formerly in Stanley township, Wakefield parish, in the W.R. Yorkshire, adjacent to the Wakefield and Ardsley Junction line of the G.N.R., 2 miles N by W of Wakefield. It has a station, jointly with Loft-house, on the railway, and a post and money order office under Wakefield; telegraph office, Lawns Lane. The ecclesiastical parish was formed in 1861 out of Stanley ecclesiastical parish. Population, 4954. Under the Local Government Act of 1894 Outwood was made a civil parish, including also part of the ecclesiastical parish of Wrenthorpe. For parish council purposes it is divided into two wards-Outwood having eight members and Wrenthorpe five. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Wakefield; net value, £270 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Stanley. The church is ia the Decorated style, and was erected in 1858. It was restored in 1888, when a south aisle was added and a side chapel erected, and now consists of chancel, nave, aisles, and a belfry. A cemetery of 3 acres was opened in 1873, and is under the control of a burial board. The inhabitants are employed ia the neighbouring collieries.
