Oughtibridge, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Oughtibridge, a village and an ecclesiastical parish in Ecclesfield parish, in the W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands on the river Don, adjacent to the M.S. & L.R.,4½ miles NNW of Sheffield, and has a station on the railway, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Sheffield. The ecclesiastical parish contains also the hamlets of Middlewood, Onesacre, and Wharncliffe Side. Population, 2109. Middlewood Hall is the seat of the Skelton family. Industry io carried on in steelworks, cutlery manufactures, gannister-grinding, iron and steel rolling mills, paper and corn mills, and in quarries. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York; net value, £165 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Wadsley. The church was built in 1842, and is in the Norman style. There are Congregational, Wesleyan y and Reformed Methodist chapels, and a mixed national school. The last was built in 1861, with houses for the master and mistress, at a cost of £1700, and is in the Tudor style. There is also a Wesleyan chapel at Wharncliffe Side.
