Norland or Northland, West Riding of Yorkshire

Historical Description

Norland or Northland, a village and a township in the W.R. Yorkshire. The township stands on the river Galder, 1¼ mile from Sowerby Bridge station on the L. & Y.R., and 2½ miles SW of Halifax. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Sowerby Bridge. Acreage, 1273; population, 1977. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. It also sends one representative to the district council. There is a cotton mill. The manor belongs to Lord Savile. Norland was formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1877. Population, 1024. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Wakefield; gross value, £182 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Halifax. The church is in the Early English style, erected in 1866, and consists of chancel, nave, and bell-turret. There are Baptist, Free Reformed Methodist, and Primitive Methodist chapels.
