Newton (Slaidburn), West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Newton, a township, with a village, in Slaidburn parish, W.R. Yorkshire, on the river Hodder, adjacent to Lancashire, 8 miles N by W of Clitheroe town and railway station. There is a post office, of the name of Newton-in-Bowland, under Clitheroe; money order and telegraph office, Slaidburn. Acreage, 5869; population, 315. There is a parish council consisting of five members and a chairman. The Townley family are lords of the manor. Heaning and Knowl-mere Manor are chief residence—. There is a Congregational chapel and a Friends' meeting-house. A school in which the late John Bright was partially educated, is now an elementary school, with an endowment of about £70 per annum.
