Newmill, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Newmill, a village and an ecclesiastical parish in Kirkburton parish, in the W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands in a valley, 1½ mile from Thongs Bridge station on The L. & Y.R., and 6 miles SSE of Huddersfield; is a large place, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Huddersfield. There are twine and stockinet works, a dye house, and some large woollen mills. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1843, and includes the civil parishes of Fulstone and Scholes. Population, 2429. A large reservoir of Dewsbury Waterworks is at Broadstone. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Wakefield; net value, £290 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Kirkburton. The church stands on an eminence; was built in 1830 and restored in 1882; and is a neat stone structure consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, and tower.
