Malham, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Malham, a village and a township in Kirkby-in-Malham parish, W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands on the river Aire, 5½ miles E of Settle, and 5 from Bell Busk station on the M.R., is a picturesque place, and has a post office under Leeds; money order and telegraph office, Bell Busk. It has two inns, a Wesleyan chapel, and fairs on 30 June and 15 Oct. The township comprises 4282 acres; population, 163, Tarn Hall is a chief residence. Jeannot's Cave, a short distance from the village, is an interesting cavern, and a beautiful little cascade is near it. Goredale Scar, in the same direction, and about a mile from the village, is a gorge through cliffs about 300 feet high, and has been regarded by many visitors as a pre-eminently grand piece of rock scenery. Malham Cove, a little further on, is a mountain amphitheatre, with limestone cliffs rising almost vertically to a height of 285 feet, and commands from the summit of the cliffs a very gorgeous view. Limestone abounds, lead ore has been worked, and calamine is found.
