Historical Description
Whitley, Lower, a village and a township-chapelry, in Thornhill parish, W.R. Yorkshire, 2½ miles SE of Thornhill station on the L. & Y.R. and L. & N.W.R., and 3½ from Dewsbury. There is a post office under Dewsbury; money order office, Thornhill; telegraph office, Thornhill Lees. Acreage, 1038; population, 879. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Wakefield; gross value, £290 with residence. Patron, the Bishop. The church, erected in 1842, is in the Norman style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, and tower. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
