Long Preston, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Preston, Long, a village, a township, and a parish in the W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands on the river Ribble, 4 miles S by E of Settle, and has a station on a section of the M.R. and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Leeds. Fairs for cattle are held in March and Sept., and for sheep in October. The township comprises 3578 acres; population, 734; of the ecclesiastical parish, 1645. The parish contains also the townships of Wigglesworth, Helli-field, and West Halton. The manor belongs to the Duke of Devonshire. Hellifield Peel is the property of the Hamerton family. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon; gross value, £315 with residence. Patron, Christchurch, Oxford. The church is old, and consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with porch and massive low tower. The chancel was rebuilt in 1868; there are a Norman font and some memorial windows. There are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels, a mechanics' institute with library, reading, and class rooms, almshouses, and a school endowed with about £160 yearly. The almshouses were founded in 1613, and the endowment now produces over £280 per annum. The village is lighted with gas, and supplied with water by a company.
