Historical Description
Lepton, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Kirk-heaton parish, W.R. Yorkshire, on the York and Manchester railway, 4 miles E by S of Huddersfield. There is a post office under Huddersfield; money order and telegraph office, Kirkheaton. The township comprises the villages or hamlets of Bogden, Great and Little Lepton, Cowms, Gawthorpe, part of Fenay Bridge, Highgate Lane, Leptonfields, Lidgate, Lascelles Hall, Eowley, and Waterloo, and is governed by a local board. Acreage, 1863; population, 2855. The woollen manufacture is largely carried on. It was constituted an ecclesiastical parish in 1870. Population, 1587. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Wakefield; gross value, £110 with residence. Patron, the Eector of Kirkheaton. There are Wesleyan chapels at Cowms and Eowley Hill, a Primitive Methodist chapel at Leptonfields, and mechanics' institutes at Leptonfields, Lascelles Hall, and Rowley Hill.
