Laughton en le Morthen, West Riding of Yorkshire

Historical Description

Laughton-en-le-MortheD, a village, a township, and a parish in the W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands on a rising ground, 4½ miles N hy E of Kiveton Park railway station, and 7 SE of Rotherham; suffered much in the Wars of the Roses, is irregularly built, and has a post office of the name of Langhton, under Rotherham; money order and telegraph office, Maltby. The township comprises 3878 acres; population, 660. The parish contains also the township of Throapham and the hamlets of Carr, Brookhouse, and SIade Hooton. Acreage, 6019; population of the civil parish, 752; of the ecclesiastical, 955. The manor belongs to the St Leger family. There is a Roman camp. The living is a vicarage, united with Thorpe, in the diocese of York; net value, £313 with residence. Patron, the Archbishop of York. The parish church is chiefly Early English, has a door of a previous edifice, either Saxon or Early Norman, and consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with tower and spire 185 feet high. There are a Wesleyan chapel, an endowed school built in 1805, and a police station. The church of St John the Baptist, Throapham, is ancient.
