Kippax, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Kippax ("a market oak," written in Domesday Chepeach, and still pronounced locally Kippis), a village, a township, and a parish in the W.R. Yorkshire. The village-stands on an eminence, 3 miles NE by N of Methley, and 6 NW of Pontefract; and has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Leeds, and a station on the N.E.R. The township comprises 1596 acres; population, 2744; of the-ecclesiastical parish, 3727. The parish contains also the townships of Great and Little Preston. Kippax Park is the seat of the Bland family. Kippax Hall and Duffield House are chief residences commanding extensive views. Coal is largely worked, and malting and lime-burning are carried on. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon; net value, £260 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Ripon. The church is Saxon; the interior was restored in 1876, and the tower in 1894. The vicarage of Allerton Bywater is a separate-benefice. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Kirby, a topographical name, contracted from Kirkby, and signifying " a church town."
