Kilnhurst, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Kilnhurst, a village and an ecclesiastical parish in the W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands adjacent to the M.S. & L.R. and M.R., 4½ miles NE of Rotherham, and has stations on the railways, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Rotherham. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1860; population, 3127. The manor and most of the land belong to Earl Fitzwilliam. There are a colliery, iron and steel works, glass bottle works, potteries, and brickyards. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York; net value, £350 witli residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church was built in 1858, in the Early English style. There are Wesleyan, Primitive, and Free Methodist chapels. For purposes of local government Kilnhurst is partly in the parish of Swinton, and partly in that of Rawmarsh.
