Historical Description
Kildwick, a village, a township, and a parish in the W.R. Yorkshire. The township lies on the river Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, adjacent to the North Midland railway, 4 miles SSE of Skipton, and has a station on the railway and a post and money order office under Keighley; telegraph office, Cross-Hills. Acreage, 871; population, 145. The parish contains likewise the townships of Bradley (Upper and Lower), Silsden, Steeton, Farnhill, and Glusbum. Acreage, 13, 094; population of the civil parish, 7230; of the ecclesiastical, 1905. The manor of Kildwick, with Kildwick Hall, belongs to the Briggs family. There are several quarries in the parish. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon; net value, £287 with residence. Patron, Christ Church, Oxford. The church is very ancient, comprises nave,. aisle, and chancel, with porch and tower, is popularly known as " the lang kirk of Craven," and contains an interesting monument of the 14th century to the Knight Templar, Sir Robert de Styveton. The livings of Silsden and Steeton are separate benefices. Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels are in all the townships.
