Hunshelf, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Hunshelf, a township in Penistone parish, W.R. Yorkshire, near the river Don, 3 miles S of Penistone, and 2 from Wortley station on the M.S. & L.E. It has a post and money order office at Stocksbridge; telegraph office, Deepcar. It includes the hamlets of Green Moor and Snowden Hill, and comprises 2465 acres; population, 1559. There are large steel-wire works at Stocksbridge, about 1½ mile W of Deep-car railway station. The manor belongs to Lord Wharn-cliffe. Flagstone is extensively quarried, and red and black fire-clay abound. There is a New Connexion Methodist chapel at Green Moor.
