Hellifield, West Riding of Yorkshire

Historical Description

Hellifield, a village and a township in Long Preston parish, W.R. Yorkshire, on the river Ribble, 5 miles SSE of Settle, with a station on the M.R. and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Leeds. Acreage, 3401; population, 601. The manor belonged to Helge the Saxon, passed to the Percys and the Rnolles, and belongs now to the Hammer-ton family. Hellifield Peel was built in the time of Henry II., and is said to have been originally moated. Church services are held in the schoolroom, and there is a Baptist chapel.
