Historical Description
Handsworth, a village and a parish in W.R. Yorkshire. The village stands near the M.S. & L.R. and the boundary with Derbyshire, 1 mile WNW of Woodhonse station on the M.S. & L.R., and 4½ miles ESE of Sheffield. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Sheffield. The parish contains also the villages of Gleadless, Intake, Richmond,. and Woodhouse. Acreage, 3638; population, 10, 295. The manor belongs to the Duke of Norfolk, who is chief landowner. There are collieries, quarries, manufactures of cutlery, and iron and steel work. The living is a rectory in the dio-eese of York; net value, £481. Patron, the Duke of Norfolk.
The church stands on an eminence, is ancient, has a small tower with a spire 100 feet in height added in 1827, and was repaired in 1880. There are Wesleyan, Congregational, and Primitive and Free Methodist chapels in the parish.
