Craven, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Craven, an upland territory round the sources and head-streams of the rivers Aire, Wharfe, and Kibble, in the W.R. Yorkshire. The deanery of Craven comprises twenty-five parishes, and contains some of the wildest and most picturesque scenery in Yorkshire. Skipton is described as the "capital" of Craven. It gives family and peerage name to the Earls Craven. A Roman road traversed it, and Roman coins have been found on its borders, at Craven Bank, near Giggleswick.
