Barnsdale, West Riding of Yorkshire

Historical Description

Barnsdale, a hamlet in the township and parish of Camp-sail, W.R. Yorkshire, 6½ miles N of Doncaster. The nearest station is Askem (l¼ mile), on the L. & Y.R. Barnsdale Forest adjacent was the haunt of Robin Hood, and is noted in old song as the scene of his curious adventure with the Bishop of Hereford. " Then Robin he took the bishop hy the hand, And led him to merry Barnsdale; He made him to stay and sup with him that night, And to drink wine, beer, and ale."
