Historical Description

Thornton Watlass, a township and a parish in N.R. Yorkshire. The township lies 3 miles SW of Bedale railway station, and 4 from Masham, and has a post office under Bedale; money order and telegraph office, Bedale. Acreage of the township, 1482; population, 181; of the ecclesiastical parish, 374. The parish comprises also the townships of Thirn, Rookwith, and Clifton-upon-Yore. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ripon; gross value, £390 with residence. The church, except the tower, was rebuilt in 1867, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts, and aisle.
