Kirkby Fleetham, North Riding of Yorkshire

Historical Description

Kirkby Fleetham, a township and a parish in the N.R. Yorkshire, near the river Swale, 3½ miles N of Leeming Lane railway station, and 4 N by E of Bedale, containing the villages of Fleetham and Great and Little Fencote, and with a post and telegraph office under Bedale; money order office, Leeming Bar. Acreage, 3126 of land and 28 of water; population, 565. Kirkby Hall is the seat of the Courage family, who are lords of the manor and principal landowners. The living is a vicarage, united with Fencotes, in the diocese of Ripon; net value, £169 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Ripon. The church is Norman, and was thoroughly restored in 1872, has a massive well-proportioned tower, and contains some fine monuments. There are remains of an ancient edifice, supposed to have been of a religious order, surrounded by a moat. There are also remnants of the ancient village of Kirkby. The vicarage was in the beginning of the 19th century transferred to Fleetham, nearly a mile distant.
