Galloper Sand, North Riding of Yorkshire

Historical Description

Galloper Sand, a shoal in the North Sea, opposite the mouth of the Thames, about 30 miles NE of the North Foreland. It is about 4½ miles long and half a mile broad, extends north-north-westward, and has in one place only 6 feet of water. A beacon-ship with two lights 39 feet high, visible at a distance-of 11 miles, is moored on itGallow Hill, a hamlet in Bowes township and parish, N.R. Yorkshire, 4½ miles SW of Bamard Castle.
